This article was interesting. Even though ants aren't my favorite animal this one is a little cool. Martialis heureka it seems like it should be from Mars! I might not like ants but it could be cool to see this one in your backyard. But then again, not many! I find it interesting that scientist can find the family it is from and details about it from it's DNA. In 1923 there was a new ant! When was the first ant discovered? In what year? I think I will research that.
While reasearching the ant I found out that it grows to be between 2mm to 3mm. It's smaller that the Mesoleptus Hibernica parasite wasps which grow to be about 4mm long. I wonder how it finds its way around without eyes? Can it smell, or hear its way around?
I think this article was very interesting. I cannot believe that people have discovered the ant just now. After all, they estimate that it was one of the first living ant species... so they had some time to discover it. Now that scientists are discovering more things, it leaves so many more doors open on how creatures on earth evolved. Like Megan, I also wonder how it finds its way without eyes. It would be very hard to find my way if I didn't have eyes, so I'm sure the ant has a different system for knowing where things are. Like snakes use there tongue to sense how to get around.
THat is the UGLIEST ANT EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I happen to think that this ant, Martialis heureka, would come out of a scary story as a giant mutant flesh-eating ant. Though it is, as Megan said, only 2mm to 3mm long, so that can't happen. It's a great article that is full of facts. I also agree with Emma that since scientists think that this is one of the first species, why didn't they find it sooner?
This is a really cool ant. And it's smart to think that paleness and blindness are two major clues that they must have developed underground. But I just don't understand how a scientist could find something so small in a big rain-forests and it was hidden in the leaves, that's cool to have such a sharp eye for these kind of things. And they say it evolved before all the others, well that's a pretty old ant!
