This was really cool! Although, I wouldn't want a transparent head. I don't think it would be a pretty site. Anyway, it had a cool name "Barreleyes" it's kinda hard to pronounce. It's so cool how it has a clear forehead. I would like to see one in person.
This is very fascinating! This slime probably protects the eyes from harm. It is also interesting that this animal has never been caught before. I think that this might help scientists learn about the anatomy of the fish without dissecting it.
This was amazing! We never knew that there could be something that you could actually see through their head. One thing we found cool, as Nathan said, is that you can study the inside of their heads without dissecting them. We thought it looked like, in the first picture, there was leaves inside of the fish's head, but then, as we read the article, we realized that it was actually brains! WOW! We agree with Laura, that having a transparent head would be kind of weird, but the fish aren't smart enough to notice, so its ok. Also on Laura's comment, how could you see a fish in person? They're FISH, plus the pressure down there is too great for us to withstand; its not very safe to go down there. We love these fishies!
That was probably the coolest fish I have ever seen. I can't believe the Barreleyes can see out of its forehead, like a jet. And even with tubular vision it can move its eyeballs up, forward, left and right. It's also cool how the Barreleyes steal food from Siphonophores, and because of they're clear forehead they aren't bothered by its stings.
I found this fish to be a very interesting species and unlike any other i have seen. Although it is odd looking, the clear head has many evolutionary advantages. It looked like something out of a sci-fi movie like an alien of some kind.
Awesome, tubular eyes! (don't you love saying tubular?) I agree with Nina+Sarah and Nathan. It is very cool that scientists won't have to dissect the barreleyes to learn about how their internal system works. I also think it's really interesting that nature would create a thief-fish! Stealing food from a scarf! Well, a fish that looks like a scarf. But why do you think they even HAVE a clear forehead? What would cause them to adapt that way? I hope to learn more about these fish. Ms. Ghazarian, if you see another article on these animals, please post it. They're really interesting!
Ive seen a lot of odd fish, but never a fish with a see-through head! (unless a jelly fish count) :-). at first, i thought that its nostrils were it's eyes. its really cool how its eyes are at the top of its head and it can only see upwards. it would be cool if (not really) humans could see through our eyelids when we sleep. There are still thousands of fish and bugs that scientist havent found yet! im excited to see what nature will bring us next!!
That fish is totally awesome! It would be so cool to have a see-through head. But it would kinda weird because other and people could see your insides. However, the name is so cool: "Barreleyes"! I would love to see one sometime!!
Wow that is a bizarre creature. The fact that they have tubular eyes are cool. I wish I had a protective cover over my eyes. It would be weird to look through a clear membrane it would be like looking a the world through your brain. Another cool feature is that it can look around instead of looking up the whole time. I would want to see one the next time I go to the beach, but the only problem would be that it is 1 third of a mile under the sea.
I agree with Nathan that fish would be fun to dissect. But whats the point if it has a see through head? I'd love to see what is forehead felt like though. I think it's cool how it also shows how technology has advanced. Plus i do like saying tubulear!
Wow this is beast! I have never heard of a creature like that who has a transparent head! When I first saw this fish I didn't know that its eyes were the big green balls inside of his head. Go Barreleye Go!
It's kind of interesting that the fish has eyes shaped like tubes. If you were a fish, it would be very convenient to be able to look through the top, bottom, and sides of your head, in case a shark swam above, below, or alongside you.
That is the weirdest thing i have ever seen. but it was pretty cool as well. I don't think I would be able to go out in public with a transparent head. But as Nina and Sarah said, Fish aren't smart enough, so they don't know the difference. It was a very interesting topic. I really liked it, but i was a little bit confused. But i would also like to see a real one up close!
Wow, I think it is so cool that you can see through the Barreleyes' heads. I cant believe that it was never captured before.(Fishing nets or anything?) It must be good for the scientist to be able to examine it without inflicting harm to the specimen. These fish are cool because of the tubular eyes for seeing predators coming at all directions and their prey from the corner of their eyes. Also they have barrel-shaped body for getting around quickly. They can move their eyes from the side to the front and back. I also learned from this sight... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opisthoproctidae, that the fish is really resourceful and its eyes act like a telescope so they can see further... Not finished yet
I think it's nice you can see through their heads-- much more effective than dissection. Instead of killing sea animals to see what's inside them, you can just look inside, and then put it back in the ocean. And, yes, like Laura, I DO NOT want a transparent head.
It was amazing to see how you can look right through a fish's head and observe all the things inside. I learned barreleyes live deep in the Pacific Ocean where scientists send cameras to observe them straightaway. When they steal food from siphonorphore scientists think that the film that makes their head transparent protects them from the sting. So like with certain new species to see how they survive in the ocean you have to dig up a specimen and "x-ray" it, to observe this kind of fish just look through the head! I think this is a one of a kind fish that definitely has a trait other fish don't.
... it thought that was really cool. Another thing that is cool is the fact: they are able to live from the mesopelagic to bathypelagic zone, which means about 400–2,500 meters down. Isn't that amazing. It is a moderate depth for fish, but you would think that there is way more pressure for a fish with a see-through head. This my new all time favorite fish. Thanks for the awesome blog ms. G
